How to handle an inheritance Unlike other financial windfalls, inheritances can be emotionally freighted. Before you spend a dime or make plans for the money:
  1. Get the details. The estate's executor can tell you what you'll receive, when, and in what form (for example, real estate or retirement accounts).
  2. Take stock. What's your current financial situation and how will it change? Work with a financial advisor to identify goals and make investments that work with what you already own.
  3. Sell what you don't need. Don't hang on to a valuable painting you don't love or a renal property you can't manage for sentimental reasons.
  4. Plan for taxes. Talk with a tax advisor about whether (or when) you should sell assets to reduce capital gains tax exposure.
